BIM adoption across the Adria region — what 2026 looks like

Across the Adriatic, BIM adoption is no longer a question of "if" but "how fast." From the Slovenian public sector, where BIM is mandatory on most public infrastructure, to Montenegro where national BIM guidelines are being finalized, the picture in 2026 is clearer than ever.

Where each country stands

• Slovenia & Croatia — most mature. BIM mandates on public projects, growing private-sector demand.
• Montenegro — ISME TK019 standardization in progress, national guidelines in preparation. Pilots on key infrastructure.
• Serbia & North Macedonia — strong demand from large EPC contractors, slower public-sector mandate.
• Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, Kosovo — early adopters in private projects, public framework still forming.

Three pitfalls we see repeatedly

1. Treating BIM as a deliverable, not a process. A BIM model handed over at the end of design has a fraction of the value of a BIM model used throughout coordination, construction, and operation.

2. Skipping the BEP. Without a BIM Execution Plan defining LOD, naming, and exchange formats, every party invents their own — and clashes multiply.

3. Ignoring as-built reality. Existing buildings rarely match their drawings. Scan-to-BIM at the start of a renovation pays for itself many times over.
